Head West for Adventure
Listen to this article
Few places in the United States epitomize adventure more than the American West. The thought of going west means new horizons, new beginnings, and a place to make a name for yourself. And while you won’t discover any new cities or civilizations, there are still plenty of awe-inspiring adventures to be had.
Sedona, Arizona
The red rocks of Sedona have inspired generations of travelers. But more than just its picturesque view, Sedona offers one-of-a-kind experiences unique to this bustling Arizona town.
Perhaps the most unique structure in the city is the Chapel of the Holy Cross. This church, built directly into the rocks, offers spectacular views of the surrounding area and truly shines during sunrise or sunset. Although visiting the chapel or taking a scenic bus tour is a terrific way to look at the scenery — nothing beats experiencing the red rocks yourself.
Surrounding the city are ample opportunities for hiking, biking, and more. Cathedral Rock is a challenging hike with steep ascents and stunning views. But note, this hike is not for the faint of heart (or fear of heights). Slightly less challenging is the Devil’s Bridge Trail. Ranging from just under 2 miles to over 6, each of these trails culminates in crossing the natural Devil’s Bridge. For a more relaxing adventure, Slide Rock State Park offers a bit more greenery and the creek provides a cool place to swim or picnic.
Where to Stay
The Residence Inn Sedona is an ideal place to rest and recharge after a day of outdoor adventures. Located at the base of numerous trailheads of the Coconino National Forest, the spectacular natural wonders of Sedona are just outside your door. And with each suite containing a fully equipped kitchen, you can begin and end your day with a delicious home-cooked meal.

Moab, Utah
Jaw-dropping rock formations and natural beauty are Moab’s hallmarks. Whether you’re a hiker, biker, rafter, or just appreciate the wonders of the planet, there are few places more perfect than Moab.
Moab features miles and miles of trails for every experience level. Depending on which trail feels right, you’ll see everything from sand and sagebrush to intricate rock formations like the Delicate Arch. Mountain bikers love to ride the 10-mile Slickrock Loop. Originally created as a motorcycle loop, this is the most popular biking trail out of the many unique ones available. Crave adventure but want someone else to do the heavy lifting? Moab offers plenty of off-road vehicle and rafting tours including Hummers, ATVs, and more.

Beaver Creek, Colorado
Who says the great West needs to be all deserts and rock formations? Beaver Creek is a skier’s paradise with beautiful mountain surroundings perfect for a vacation focused on hitting the slopes.
As the weather gets colder and snow begins to fall, Beaver Creek turns into an ideal place to ski and snowboard. Seasoned mountain veterans will find a variety of downhill choices for their experience level. And beginners? There are plenty of opportunities to learn. From children’s ski school to tackling the thrill of snowboarding, you’re sure to get the skills necessary to have a fun day on the slopes. If you don’t plan to hit the mountain, catch a show at the Vilar Performing Arts Center or head to the rink and ice skate.
The same hills that are perfect for downhill skiing are also great for hiking during the summer and fall. Hiking and biking trails weave their way through the landscape and provide spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.
